The BookThe Campaign


Beer Yorkshire is an exciting collaborative project from independent beer publication, Hop & Barley, and talented beer photographer, Mark Newton.  A celebration of Yorkshire’s diverse brewing landscape, it’s about photographically documenting this wonderful corner of Britain’s brewing culture and curating it into a carefully designed, coffee table book.

Built on tradition and driven by innovation, Yorkshire hosts some of the beer industry’s foremost purveyors and producers.  For the past eighteen months, photographer Mark Newton has worked to tirelessly document every facet of Yorkshire’s beer industry.  From breweries to bottle shops, festivals to farmers, it’s a story characterised by the strong and the fiercely independent people who make the beer scene what it is.  The Beer Yorkshire book is a celebration of an industry which, in the face of adversity, has not only survived, but thrived - buoyed by our insatiable thirst for good beer.




We want the production of the book to complement the beauty of Mark’s photography and reflect the passion and craft of those featured. As well as investing significant time in the design, we’ve worked closely with our printers Pressision and paper suppliers G F Smith to ensure that the specification best showcases Mark’s photography. This doesn’t come cheap, however, and we need your help to raise the funds necessary to print and publish the book.

In the coming months we’ll be launching a crowdfunding campaign and asking you to get involved.  Everyone who pledges will get their name printed in the book, with additional rewards offered depending on you pledge level.

About Mark

Mark is a Yorkshire-based photographer with over ten years professional experience.  His career started in Leeds shooting bands for local websites and magazines, since then he’s gone on to establish himself as a leading wedding photographer, working both here in the UK and abroad.  His relaxed, photojournalistic style lends itself to storytelling, and specialises in capturing those special moments that occur naturally. 
As a self-confessed “beer geek”, it was only a matter of time before he sought to combine these two pursuits and approached us to work on the magazine.  Since then, Mark has contributed to four volumes of Hop & Barley, on features including our special article celebrating Thornbridge Brewery’s tenth anniversary and an extended exploration of the Leeds beer scene. 
Beer Yorkshire is Mark’s most ambitious project to date, and we’re proud to be a part of it.


About Hop & Barley

Hop & Barley is an independent publication which explores the people and stories behind the contemporary brewing movement.  Since launching in July 2014, we’ve produced eight volumes and distributed thousands of copies worldwide.  With an emphasis on slow journalism and evergreen content, Hop & Barley deliberately distances itself from news and reviews, to uncover stories of passionate people and fervent creativity.
We’re proud to be part of a movement reviving craft and passion in publishing.  The market for photography and art books has grown steadily in recent years, and stems from a reaction against the growing presence of digital content.  The book is now a desirable object, with brands such as Hoxton Mini Press, Kinfolk and Monocle leading the way in curious, carefully curated bookshelf staples.   Beer Yorkshire is an exciting opportunity for Hop & Barley to publish the first of what we hope is a series of image-led books documenting the world’s most pre-eminent beer scenes.
